How Survey Design Errors Propagate

Survey errors are dangerous because they're invisible in the output. A survey with leading questions produces data that looks exactly like a survey with neutral questions — both return percentages and confidence intervals. The error doesn't show up in the data; it shows up in decisions made from that data.

Survey length: Every question you add reduces response quality on subsequent questions. The last 20% of questions in a long survey are answered with significantly less care. Keep surveys to under 10 minutes for general populations.

Write the analysis before writing the survey: What decisions will this survey inform? What data would change those decisions? Write these analyses first, then build survey questions that produce the inputs those analyses require. This prevents surveys that ask interesting questions but don't inform any decision.

Use established, validated scales for attitude and satisfaction measures: NPS, CSAT, and SUS (System Usability Scale) are validated and benchmarkable. Custom scales for attitudes require validation to be trustworthy.

Randomize answer option order: For multi-choice questions, first and last options receive systematically more selections than middle options. Randomization distributes this bias.

Pilot before launching: Test your survey with 5–10 respondents who share characteristics with your target population. Question confusion reveals itself quickly.
